Chess - The Story of Chesspieces From Antiquity to Modern Times

Chess - The Story of Chesspieces From Antiquity to Modern Times, Hans & Siegfried Wichmann, 328 p.

A very comprehensive history of chesspieces, starting with 70 pages of text subdivided into various chapters, followed by 196 pages of "Plates", i.e. pictures of chess pieces (most of them in b/w, some coloured), followed by another 50 pages of additional "Notes on the Plates". All in all very well edited with an enormous amount of additional information and references to secondary literature.

The original was published in German language in 1960 under the title "Schach, Ursprung und Wandlung der Schachfigur". The English version was issued in 1964.

I bought my copy as a used book. It previously belonged to the Aldershot Public Library in Hampshire County. Pursuant to the register, the book was only loaned eight times since 1988. According to the last entry in the register, the book was loaned until 8 June 2005.
