English Chess Set, "St. George" Pattern, late 19th century

Antique English "St. George" pattern chess set with a King size of 3.6" / 92 mm.

The pieces are nicely turned from rosewood and boxwood. The Kings with a pointed spiral finial. The Queens with large bulb tops. Rooks as ribbed towers with four crenellations. The Bishops rather small and chunky with deep carved mitre splits. The Knights as horses' heads with a very elegant slim form and nicely carved manes. The pieces are not weighted and not felted.

Very playable set in excellent condition. The pieces seem to be covered with some clear lacquer finish. The lovely rosewood grain on the dark pieces may not be visible on the pictures due to the light conditions, but on closer inspection the grain shines through and is perfectly visible.
