Chess Board with Maple Inlays and Screwed Rims, Early 20th Century

Massive board from the first half of the 20th century. Wooden inlays (the dark side is maple wood, the other woods used for the inlays are unknown) applied to a solid wood base plate. Wooden rims varnished in some dark colour and attached to the base plate with brass screws.

The overall size of the board is 620 x 620 mm. Playing size is 480 x 480 mm with the individual squares measuring 60 x 60 mm. My personal favorite!
The board was a refurbishment project of mine. When I got it, the board looked a bit dull, the screws were tarnished and so on. I started with unscrewing the rim and cleaning both, the individual rim parts as well as the board surface from dust. After that I carefully sanded the surface of the board with rather high grits (120 up to 3000) so as to not damage the veneer before I applied several layers of amber french polish. The brass screws were buff polished to a high gloss before reattaching the rim.
