Philippine Staunton Chess Set, 1974

Philippine Staunton Chess Set, 1974

I have several Philippine Staunton sets on offer. The sets have a king size of 4.6" and are made of narra (white side) and kamagong (black side), both very special, rare and valuable woods with their unique grains (visible in some of the pictures). The white pieces look rather identical, as narra has a yellowish, but usually not very strong grain. The black pieces, however, show more variation, as kamagong belongs to the so called coloured ebony timbers. The colour range goes from uniformly black or dark brown pieces to pieces with a vivid brown-orange grain, the latter of which is the reason why kamagong has always been sought after.

Both, narra and kamagong are very rare timbers protected by the laws of the Philippines. Chess sets of these rare timbers have therefore not been produced for several decades. You can sometimes buy them in used condition for prices starting at 150 US$ for this size. The sets I am offering are in vintage new condition and have never been used before (!), as they have been stored in a somewhat forgotten crate since 1974. I am offering them for 80 EUR per set + shipping costs. The offer is for the pieces only, i.e. the board shown in the pictures is not included.

The pictures shown below are just samples. The sets shown on the pictures are already sold. Nevertheless, the sets I still have on offer are similar in shape and style, as they are from the same batch.
