Romanian Analysis Chess Set, 1990s

Romanian Analysis Chess Set, 1990s

Romanian library sized chess set with a king size of 6.2 cm. The small size makes the set most suitable for analysis. The pieces are made of wood, one side natural, the other side lacquered in black. The carving of the set is rather simple, but very characteristic of Romanian sets.

The kings with a ball finial instead of crosses, the queens with a small spike finial. Rooks as tapering towers in a manner very typical for Romanian sets. Knights as simple carved horse heads. What is unusual about this set are the bishops. They have - very typically - their heads in the opposite colour, as is known also from Austrian coffee house sets or other Romanian sets. However, usually only the head is in the opposite colour, while in this set not only the spherical heads, but also the collars below are coloured.
