Here is something originally Danish: the so called "Union chess pieces (aka "Knubbel"). These sets are small and look somewhat modest, but the design makes sense. Solid, sturdy and utterly robust pieces with no cross finials that break easily, broad bases that do not require weighting, and so on. Despite their small size these were the predominant tournament set used by the Danish chess union (hence the name) for more than 60 years.
