German "Toy" Chess Set in the tradition of the Nuremberg toy makers, probably early 19th century. Pieces made from fruitwood, the two sides distinguished by white and black hues. Kings and Queens with painted details to the faces and tiered galleries deriving from the "crows nest" galleries of the Selenus type sets, partly painted in red colour, Rooks as turrets with checkerboard pattern and button like finials, Knights as carved horses' heads on raised galleries, Bishops with painted details to the faces and caps bearing feather finials, Pawns of baluster outline. King 10 cm.
