English Ivory Chess Set, William Lund, 1835-1845

Ivory chess set with a king size of 9.5 cm from the workshop of William Lund in London, as is evident from the original stamp underneath the white king, which reads "William Lund, Maker, 24 Fleet Street". White pieces in natural ivory, the other side stained in red. The Kings with a cross pattée, the Queens with a fleur de lys finial. Knights carved in a manner typical for the Lund workshop.

William Lund set up a manufactory and shop at 24 Fleet Street in London in 1835. After the death of his father, Thomas Lund, in 1845, William additionally took over his father's business and at the same time expanded his own shop to include 23 Fleet Street. The stamp, which only mentions 24 Fleet Street, therefore probably indicates that the set was made between 1835 and 1845.
