French Régence Chess Set, early 19th century

French Régence Chess Set, early 19th century

Here is another French Régence chess set, which was presumably made in the French Jura region in the early 19th century. The pieces are turned from boxwood, one side natural, the other side stained in dark brown. King size is 10.2 cm. The set has all the typical features of the Régence pattern, including the king's crown, the bishops' collar imitating a tricorn and the identical finials on queen, bishop and pawn. The shape of the knights is typical for early 19th century sets, as is the style of the pawns. A beautiful detail of this set are the striking rooks designed as tall towers on a small pedestal with brickwork, colour heightened embrasures and four crenellations on top.

The set is shown on a small late 19th century chess table covered in leather.
