Danish Bone Chess Set, "Selenus" Pattern, ca. 1820-1850

Danish Bone Chess Set, "Selenus" Pattern, ca. 1820-1850

Here is a nice little set that I recently found in Copenhagen. It is a Danish chess set in the Selenus pattern made of bone, one side natural coloured, the other red coloured. The king height is only 6 cm. Although it is a very small set, it has a tremendous charm. The kings have two galleries, the queens have one gallery. The rooks are depicted as turrets with brickwork. The knights' horse heads look typically Danish. Also typically Danish are the differently coloured finials on the bishops and the rooks, which are each shaped as conical spires. In my estimation, the set was made in the first half of the 19th century.
