Philippine Staunton Chess Set, ca. 1970

Philippine Staunton Chess Set, ca. 1970

Small Staunton chess set made in the Philippines. The dark pieces are made from Kamagong wood, the white pieces from a lighter mellow wood, maybe Narra or Acacia. The set is rather small, king size is 87 mm (3.4"). The pieces are not made in the traditional Philippine Staunton pattern, but in a pattern that - according to information I was given, but were not able to verify - partly resembles an old German style (e.g. in the design of the king).

Philippine International Master Ruben Rodrigues used a similar set for training. Rodrigues gave his personal set to a good friend of mine in Singapore, who held it in good custody before bringing it back to the Philippines, where it now resides again in the custody of another common friend.
