Romanian "De-Stauntonised" Chess Set, 1990s

After the Romanian Revolution in 1989 and the fall of the communist government, religious symbolism was formally re-introduced into public life and no longer banned, as was the case under the communists. Hence, in this set the crosses were officially put back onto the kings. At the same time, there was a return to old traditions, which is why the bishops in this set were "de-stauntonised" in that the head of the bishops was again shown in the opposite colour, similar to the tradition known from all over Eastern Europe.

While the set is not weighted (as almost all Romanian sets), it has an attractive king size of 8.9 cm or 3.5". Therefore, this type of set was popular for tournament play in the 1990s and 2000s. An example is pictured below showing Romanian GM Florin Gheorgiu on the occasion of his official retirement from tournament play in 2014 at the age of 70.
