German Bone & Wood Chess Set, "Selenus" Pattern, ca. 1830-1860

German Bone & Wood Chess Set, "Selenus" Pattern, ca. 1830-1860

A rare mid-19th century German chess set of the "Selenus" type with a king size of 10.2 cm. The set is very unusual as this is a set which apparently was repaired at some stage. While I would normally stay away from sets with a large number of repairs, this one is different. The white side pieces are made of high quality bone (in fact, the auctioneer thought this to be ivory, but I am convinced it is bone), but some parts were replaced with wooden parts. These wooden parts were made in such a high quality themselves from what appears to be fruitwood that it would be difficult to distinguish them from the original were it not for the obvious differences in the material. The black side is turned from ebony. The kings with two pierced galleries, the queens with one.  A highlight are the rooks, which are shown as cupolas on four columns surmounted by crescents.

The set is shown on a German Games Box, ca. 1860.
