German Bone Chess Set, "Selenus" Pattern, ca. 1830-1860

German Bone Chess Set, "Selenus" Pattern, ca. 1830-1860

A rare mid-19th century German bone chess set of the "Selenus" type with a king size of 11 cm. One side left natural, the other stained red. The kings with two pierced galleries, the queens with one. Both kings and queens with hoop crowns surmounted by crosses in the opposite colour. The bishops with serrated collar and a small baluster shaped finial in the opposite colour. The knights as carved horse heads. The rooks with cupolas on four columns surmounted by crescents in the opposite colour. The pawns  with serrated collar and a knop finial.

What is particularly unusual and interesting about this set is the combination of Christian symbols in form of the cross on the kings and queens and Islamic symbols in form of the crescent on the rooks.
