Austrian Upright Chess Set (Lasker-Schlechter type, Vienna leg), ca. 1910

Here is an example of the chess set used in the Vienna leg of the 1910 world championship match between Emanuel Lasker and Carl Schlechter. The king size is 12 cm. As in other sets of this type, there is a slight variation between individual pieces, even though it is without doubt that the set is an original from the early 20th century with identical reddish paper felts on the underside. In the 1910 championship, Emanuel Lasker defended his title against Carl Schlechter. The match was held from January 6 to February 10, 1910. The first five games were played in Vienna (the Vienna leg), the last five games were played in Berlin (the Berlin leg).
