German Staunton Chess Set (E. H. Schütze), 1925-1935
A German chess set in the Staunton pattern made by E. H. Schütze. The pieces are turned from boxwood and ebony with a king size of 9.5 cm. All pieces are weighted. The knights with glass eyes, which was particularly popular in the 1920s and 1930s.
E. H. Schütze was a Berlin based turner, who later specialised in toys and sporting goods. Schütze first appears in the Berlin address books in 1850 with the address Leipziger Str. 16 before moving his workshop several times until he set up shop at Kochstr. 35 in April 1873, an address which was then maintained until traces of the company are lost in the mid 1930s. Schütze
was listed as the owner of the shop until 1889. From 1890 to 1903, his heirs, Robert and Franz Schütze, were listed as proprietors. For a short period from 1904 to 1907, Franz Schütze and Georg Lamerdin were then listed as proprietors. From 1908 onwards, Georg Lamerdin was the sole proprietor of the shop. According to an advert in Deutsche Spielwarenzeitung, the business was taken over in 1935 by Fritz Koßmehl, but so far I could not find any further information after that date. For more information on Schütze, see also my article German Chess Set Makers (continued) published in Chess Collector Vol. XXXI No. 2 (July 2022) and accessible under Articles & Publication.
