French Régence Chess Set (Henri Delaire), ca. 1930

A chess set with a king size of 9 cm in the French Régence style made of some type of early plastic, probably catalin or celluloid. One side ivory coloured, the other side in a rich and slightly opaque burgundy red. The pieces are quite large and heavy, which is partly due to the fact that the large pieces are made of several individual sections which are held together by a rather large and heavy metal screw. The knights with glass eyes are particularly beautiful. Unfortunately, there are some damages to the crenellations of three rooks.

The set came in a fitted box imprinted on the inside of the lid with "H. Delaire, 4. Rue des Pyramides, Paris". Delaire started advertising under this address around 1918, while before he was located at Faubourg Saint Denis.
